School Holiday Fun at the West Coast Fossil Park

With schools closing on Friday for the school holidays, we have the perfect kids programme and activities planned that will not just entertain your kids, but teach them more about the world in which we live, whilst having fun.

Children can enjoy mock digs, puppet shows, treasure hunts, make and paint their own fossils and learn about fossils and the world as it was hundreds and thousands of years ago in the mini lab.

Families can join a guided tour of the main dig site, explore the museum and exhibition centre and enjoy a delicious meal in our restaurant.

You can choose our all-inclusive kids package or just to do a selection of activities from as little as R25 per child.

Package 1:  All activities combined (R120 per learner/ child)

Without giving it all away…we have combined all the activities into a treasure hunt that will take kids on an adventure through the mini lab where they will get a map and directions on how to unlock the next stage of the mock dig to find the hidden bones. They will examine the bones they dug out in the mini lab before continuing on their adventure to find what they need to make and paint their own fossils.

Package 2: Mock dig and Puppet show (R50 per learner / child)

Kids will participate in a mock dig, looking for hidden bones. They will then learn more about the bones they found, comparing it to the human skeleton. The package includes a fun, educational puppet show.

Package 3:  Mock dig, mini lab, paint your own fossil (R80 per learner / child)

This package includes the mock dig, learning more about what was found in the mini lab and then each child gets a cast fossil which they will paint. They will be allowed to take their painted fossil home.

Package 4: Mock dig only (R25 per learner / child)

Package 5: Puppet show only (R30 per learner/ child)

About the West Coast Fossil Park

The West Coast Fossil Park is a National Heritage Site and a public access palaeo-tourism venture situated in a rehabilitated phosphate mining area. The site is located near Langebaan, about 120 km from Cape Town. What makes the Park unique is that it is centered around edu-tourism, providing a valuable in situ learning experience for researchers, students and visitors.

Scientifically, the West Coast Fossil Park represents possibly the greatest diversity of fossils found anywhere in the world dated to the Miocene/Pliocene transition (about 5.2 million years ago). It is also one of the very few sites in Africa where actual fossil remains can be viewed in situ and is ranked amongst the best education and palaeo-tourism destinations in the world.

It is a place where children and adults alike can learn about past life on earth and how we can help to overcome the challenges humanity will face in future.
