West Coast Fossil Park hosts Cultural Tourism Showcase

In celebration of Tourism Month 2022, the West Coast Fossil Park (WCFP) partnered with Wesgro to host the West Coast Tourism Showcase on Thursday, 22 September. It was an opportunity for participating tourism businesses and the local community to (re)introduce visitors to the region’s culture, heritage and legendary hospitality.

The showcase coincided with the 24th anniversary of the WCFP’s opening. It remains one of very few sites where fossil remains can be viewed in situ and ranks amongst the best education and palaeo-tourism destinations in the world. Scientifically, the WCFP represents possibly the greatest diversity of fossils found anywhere in the world dated to the Miocene/Pliocene transition (about 5.2 million years ago) and forms part of the Cradle of Human Culture initiative.

To mark both Tourism Month and the WCFP’s anniversary, visitors enjoyed a day filled with fun for the whole family. The park hosted free tours to the public and a special free programme for the little ones. Visitors enjoyed live performances by local artists as well as an array of authentic Weskus dishes served up as part of a Weskus Community Feast. Local artists and crafters showed off their creative talent with a nature themed art exhibition and craft market. Those interested in learning more about Palaeontology attended a lecture by Prof John Compton.

Pippa Haarhoff, Director of the WCFP says: “What better way to celebrate our 24th anniversary than by joining hands with neighbours and partners to show off the rich cultural heritage and authentic hospitality that makes the Weskus so unique. It was wonderful welcoming both familiar faces and new friends.”

Weskus Tourism Manager, Gurshell Abrahams says: “The Weskus is renowned for its culture and heritage and has a truly remarkable story to share with the world. Visitors have the unique opportunity to revisit time and experience a vast array of fossils dating back some 5 million years ago, the remnants of the area’s inhabitants centuries ago are explored through informative guided tours conducted by local guides. Visitors can also cycle or horse-ride through the park if they’re feeling adventurous and want to experience more. The West Coast Fossil Park is truly one of our flagship attractions and one we hope to see gain even more traction in the years to come.”

“When it comes to culture and character, there are few regions in South Africa that can compete with the West Coast. From unique activities and delicious seafood dishes to fascinating history and colourful locals, there is so much to experience!” says Monika Iuel, the Chief Destination Marketing Officer of Wesgro.
